CSR Network Zambia and Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre Formalise Strategic Partnership

CSR Network Zambia (CSRNZ) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre (KGRTC), formalising a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening capacity building, professional training, and sustainability leadership in Zambia and the wider region.

The collaboration brings together CSRNZ’s expertise in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), and sustainability advocacy with KGRTC’s position as a SADC Centre of Excellence in energy and technical training.

The MOU establishes a framework for joint training programmes and structured knowledge exchange, with a focus on developing practical, market-ready solutions for corporates, institutions, and professionals. By leveraging complementary strengths, the partnership seeks to deliver both short-term impact through targeted programmes and long-term value through structured collaboration.

Speaking on the partnership, both institutions underscored the importance of moving beyond symbolic cooperation toward initiatives that are measurable, scalable and aligned with national and regional development priorities.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to building credible sustainability capacity and positioning Zambia as a hub for high-quality professional and technical training in Africa.

CSR Network Zambia and Z’Kidpreneur Academy Forge Strategic Alliance to Cultivate Zambia’s Future Sustainability Leaders

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – In a move that redefines the trajectory of corporate responsibility in the region, CSR Network Zambia (CSRNZ) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Z’Kidpreneur Academy. This partnership marks the birth of the Eco-Fusion Project, a pioneering initiative designed to anchor sustainability and environmental innovation in the hearts and minds of Zambia’s youngest citizens.

The core of this partnership is the recognition that the transition to a Green Economy cannot be achieved through adult-led policy alone. By focusing on children aged 8–18, Eco-Fusion addresses environmental challenges—particularly waste management—at their educational roots.

Engaging children is not merely a social gesture; it is a strategic necessity for the following reasons:

  • Systemic Behavioral Change – Early engagement promotes a generation of “Sustainability Natives” who view environmental stewardship as a fundamental lifestyle, rather than a forced compliance.
  • Innovation Catalysts – Through “Challenge Workshops” and interactive learning, children are empowered to design localized solutions for climate and waste challenges, serving as active problem-solvers for their communities.
  • Institutional Legacy – Participating organizations are not just funding an event; they are building long-term capability and credibility before sustainability challenges become externally imposed regulatory obligations.

“Sustainability and waste management are no longer future considerations; they are immediate operational and reputational priorities,” says Lee Muzala, Executive Director of CSR Network Zambia. “This partnership reflects a deliberate shift toward proactive leadership. We are involving experts to translate abstract concepts into measurable outcomes that begin in the classroom and end in the boardroom.”

Chimfwembe Mulenga, Executive Director of Z’Kidpreneur Academy, echoed this sentiment, adding: “We’re excited to partner with CSR Network Zambia on the Eco-Fusion Project. At Z’Kidpreneur Academy, we’re passionate about empowering Zambia’s children with the skills and mindset to drive positive change. This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission to cultivate a generation of young leaders who can tackle pressing environmental challenges.

By joining forces with CSR Network Zambia, we’re taking a significant step towards integrating sustainability and entrepreneurship into the fabric of our education system. The Eco-Fusion Project will not only inspire young minds but also equip them with the tools to design innovative solutions for a greener future.”

Eco-Fusion is envisioned as a high-impact, one-day engagement featuring innovation challenges, panel discussions, and solution design. By integrating sustainability with entrepreneurship, the partnership aims to demonstrate that environmental stewardship, when approached strategically, generates tangible value for children, institutions, and the broader Zambian economy.

A Look Inside the Future: CSR Network Zambia Tours Chilanga Cement’s Eco Unit

Lusaka, Zambia – 24 September 2025 – The CSR Network Zambia, along with representatives from 20 leading corporates and civil society organizations, had the distinct privilege of touring the Eco Unit at Chilanga Cement.

Before embarking on the site tour, the event kicked off with insightful opening remarks that set the tone for the day. Delivering the opening address, Mr. Jonas Kaonga, Deputy Plant Manager, emphasized Chilanga Cement’s long-term vision for sustainable waste management.

“At Chilanga Cement, our environmental policy guides us to reduce the impact of climate change through the development, manufacture, and promotion of sustainable solutions. Last year alone, we invested K18 million into the ECO Unit, including the acquisition of a state-of-the-art shredder with a capacity of two tons per hour. This bold investment enhances our ability to manage non-recyclable plastic waste, one of the most persistent challenges in our communities, transforming it into valuable resources while keeping our environment clean,” he said.

Mr. Lee Muzala, CSR Network Zambia Executive Director, highlighted the social dimension of waste management, noting that waste should be viewed not as a problem but as an opportunity:
“Waste comes from every sector; households, offices, markets, and today it is becoming a valuable resource. For us in the CSR space, it presents an opportunity to innovate, collaborate, and contribute to building resilient communities and a sustainable country. Chilanga Cement, through the ECO Unit, has the machinery and processes in place to make this possible,” he said.

Partner organizations also shared testimonials, reaffirming the impact of Chilanga Cement’s waste management solutions. Zambia Sugar Plc, represented by Mr. Wiza Chaibela, commended the Chilanga Cement through ECO Unit partnership, which has enabled the safe disposal of over 60 tonnes of waste: “This collaboration reflects shared values for a greener Zambia. What matters is not just disposal but the assurance that our waste is treated in line with circular economy principles.”

The site visit offered participants a first-hand appreciation of Chilanga Cement’s innovative approach to waste disposal and energy recovery. Stakeholders were particularly impressed by the company’s significant investment in a state-of-the-art Shredder, valued at K18 million, with the capacity to shred 2 tonnes of waste per hour. This specialized equipment focuses solely on non-recyclable plastics, contaminated hazardous containers, and sensitive materials such as packaging waste and old uniforms from various companies, ensuring safe and efficient processing. The Eco Unit utilizes co-processing solutions, converting this waste into an alternative energy source for cement production.

This demonstration was a powerful testament to Chilanga Cement’s deep commitment to contributing to a cleaner, greener, and sustainable Zambia. Participants gained valuable insight into the rigorous, behind-the-scenes processes that make every bag of their cement a step towards a more sustainable industrial future.

The tour not only showcased environmental responsibility in action but also emphasized how industry leaders are tackling waste management challenges through innovation.

A huge thank you to the Eco Unit and the entire team at Chilanga Cement for hosting us and for sharing their vision for a circular economy in Zambia!

GATBRO “Protect Your Home” Campaign – A Step Towards a Malaria-Free Zambia

On December 11, 2024, CSR Network Zambia had the privilege of attending the launch of the “Protect Your Home” campaign by GATBRO International Limited, endorsed by the End Malaria Council and the Ministry of Health. This campaign, inaugurated by the Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Robert Kamalata, represents a significant stride towards combating malaria, one of Zambia’s most pressing public health challenges.

In his keynote speech, Mr. Kamalata recounted a personal experience of being protected from mosquitoes by GATBRO products during a trip to Mwamfushi in Kafue National Park. His heartfelt gratitude underscores the practical impact and critical need for effective malaria prevention tools.

The “Protect Your Home” campaign, spearheaded by GATBRO International Zambia in partnership with Tiger Brands, operates under the mantra: zero mosquitoes, zero malaria. Imran, the Sales & Marketing Director of GATBRO International Zambia, emphasized that the fight against malaria is not just a local issue but a national priority. By empowering communities across Lusaka Province and beyond, the campaign aims to create a malaria-free Zambia.

With endorsements from the Ministry of Health and the End Malaria Council, the campaign is set to roll out extensive awareness programs. These initiatives will reach clinics and rural communities, where the need for affordable malaria prevention tools is most acute. In her remarks, Magalie Ngomba, the Marketing and PR Manager of GATBRO International Zambia, highlighted that the campaign will target 160 clinics, focusing on empowering mothers to protect their families. By donating treated mosquito nets and Doom coils, GATBRO ensures that even the most vulnerable communities have access to essential prevention tools.

The real impact of the “Protect Your Home” campaign lies in its ability to save lives and improve community health. Malaria remains a significant threat, particularly in rural and high-density areas where access to preventive measures is limited. The campaign’s commitment to providing treated mosquito nets and Doom coils directly addresses this gap, offering practical solutions that families can rely on.

Beyond the distribution of prevention tools, the campaign also focuses on education. Awareness campaigns will help communities understand the importance of using mosquito nets and coils, how to effectively prevent mosquito breeding, and recognize the symptoms of malaria for early treatment. This holistic approach ensures that communities are not only equipped with tools but also with knowledge.

As World Malaria Day approaches, the “Protect Your Home” campaign serves as a call to action for all Zambians. It is a reminder that fighting malaria requires collective effort and sustained commitment. The campaign’s collaborative approach, involving government bodies, international partners, and local influencers like Esther Chungu and Michy, underscores the power of unity in tackling public health challenges.

The launch of the “Protect Your Home” campaign marks a significant milestone in Zambia’s fight against malaria. By focusing on practical, community-driven solutions and promoting collaboration across sectors, GATBRO International Limited and its partners are setting a powerful example of CSR in action. This campaign not only aims to reduce malaria incidence but also to empower communities with the tools and knowledge needed for lasting health improvements. As we continue to support and document such impactful initiatives, CSR Network Zambia remains committed to highlighting the transformative power of CSR in driving socio-economic development.

Waste No Waste!

[21/09/2024] Today, as I stood along Cairo Road in Lusaka right in front of Protea Hotel, witnessing the launch of color-separated trash bins, I couldn’t help but reflect on the transformative potential of such a simple act. Organized by the Italian Embassy and supported by partners like Dangote Cement, Protea Hotel, Ciela Resort, and many others, this initiative is more than just a neat display of colorful bins. It’s a wake-up call for Zambians, a reminder that the waste we often ignore can become something valuable, if only we care to separate it. Graced by His Excellency, the Italian Ambassador to Zambia, Mr. Enrico de Agostini, and Her Worship, the Mayor of Lusaka, Ms. Chilando Chitangala, this event was more than ceremonial. It sparked a much-needed conversation about how we handle waste at household, business, and school levels.

Ambassador de Agostini, with his popular phrase, “Waste No Waste, Trash is Treasure” challenged us to think about the opportunities we’re missing by failing to separate our waste. His words ring especially true in our local context. Zambia, like many countries, grapples with waste management issues. Mountains of trash grow in our streets and dump sites, while opportunities for recycling and repurposing are buried underneath. Yet, if we collectively adopted the habit of waste separation, the pathway to recycling, reuse, repurposing, and even energy production becomes clear.

Untapped Potential

In Zambia, the sight of improperly disposed waste is common. From household garbage casually tossed into mixed bins to businesses disposing of potentially valuable waste without thought, the idea of “waste separation” remains foreign to many. Yet, if we could embed this practice into the fabric of our daily lives, the rewards would be tremendous.

Imagine a society where every household separates their organic waste from plastics, paper, and metals. Organic waste could be composted and used for farming, especially in rural areas where agriculture plays a huge role in livelihoods. Plastics and metals could be collected by recycling businesses, creating jobs and reducing pollution. Paper waste could be repurposed into new products, sparking a circular economy where nothing goes to waste.

The bins launched along Cairo Road, managed by the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company Limited (LISWMC), represent an opportunity for us to kickstart this revolution. However, it won’t succeed unless we as citizens play our part.

Changing the Mindset

The real challenge lies not in placing the bins but in changing the mindset. At the household level, many Zambians still see waste as a nuisance to be gotten rid of, rather than a resource. Education is key. We need to teach people that by separating their waste, they are contributing to something bigger—cleaner cities, new jobs, and even energy. Households can turn organic waste into compost, paper into reusable products, and plastics into recyclable materials. What was once an afterthought could turn into a daily practice.

For businesses, waste separation should become part of their corporate responsibility. Companies that embrace this practice can create new business opportunities while contributing to environmental sustainability. The partnership between the Italian Embassy and major organizations like Dangote Cement and Ciela Resort shows how business can lead in this space. Companies should actively engage in educating employees and customers about the benefits of separating waste, establishing systems within their operations to manage and recycle it efficiently.

Schools are perhaps the most important battleground in the fight for mindset change. Children are natural champions of new ideas. If schools adopt waste separation as a fundamental practice—providing bins for paper, plastics, and organic waste—students will take these habits home. Imagine a generation that grows up viewing waste not as trash but as treasure.

Creating Opportunities

The beauty of waste separation is that it doesn’t just solve environmental problems—it creates new opportunities. Recycling businesses can flourish, turning plastics into reusable materials and metals into products for the construction or art industries. Compost from organic waste can boost agricultural productivity, reducing our reliance on chemical fertilizers. Furthermore, energy production from waste is a largely untapped area in Zambia, and separating waste at the source can make this a viable business opportunity.

Supporting the growth of these industries means more jobs and a stronger economy. Small businesses can sprout from waste collection services, recycling centers, and composting facilities. More importantly, the practice of waste separation creates a circular economy where resources are reused, and nothing is wasted. As we saw today, numerous businesses are already supporting the push towards waste management. If the momentum continues, Zambia could become a regional leader in sustainable waste practices.

The Way Forward

The Italian Ambassador’s message was clear—waste separation makes recycling and repurposing much easier. But for it to work, everyone must play their part. We need to raise awareness at all levels of society, encouraging a shift in mindset that views waste not as a problem but as an opportunity. The businesses that supported today’s event—Dangote Cement, Protea Hotel, Ciela Resort, and many others—have set an example. Now, it’s up to the rest of us to follow suit.

As a sustainability and impact advocate, I left today’s event hopeful. Hopeful that the initiative we witnessed will be the beginning of a movement where Zambians everywhere take pride in separating waste, knowing they are contributing to a cleaner, more prosperous future. If we succeed in changing this mindset, we won’t just be planting trees or placing bins—we will be planting seeds of progress and turning trash into treasure for generations to come.

Let’s not waste the opportunity.

“Building Dreams, Bridging Futures: IHS Zambia’s CSR Triumph at Kanyanja Community School”

CSR Network Zambia had the privilege of witnessing a significant milestone in the history of Kakote Village – the official handover of a one by three classroom block at the only school in the area.

In the heart of the Chifwema area in Kafue district, Kanyanja Community School stands tall as a testament to resilience and unwavering commitment to education despite adversities faced along the way. The handover ceremony by IHS Zambia, on 7th December 2023, marked a monumental chapter in the school’s journey, unveiling the profound impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in shaping the future.

Amidst the joyous celebration, young voices stole the spotlight with a poignant poem titled “Education.” These children, the heartbeat of Kanyanja, reminded us that education is not just a building — it’s the foundation of dreams and the key to shaping identities. Their words resonated, emphasizing that the Kanyanja Community School project is a beacon of hope, offering the promise of a better future.

Mr. Augustin Phiri, the Acting CEO of IHS Zambia, emphasized the company’s dedication through four pillars that influence their CSR and sustainability activities – Education and Economic Growth, Environment and Climate Change, People and Communities, and Ethics and Governance. The school projects undertaken by the company align with community needs and national development goals, creating a ripple effect. Similar initiatives, by IHS Zambia, in Chainda, Kapete and Musolekeni Community Schools reveal a sustained commitment to uplifting communities, one school at a time. IHS Zambia’s commitment aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 4. Private sector engagement becomes pivotal in ensuring marginalized communities receive the educational infrastructure they deserve, contributing to national socio-economic development. Education, a cornerstone of development, was the star of the handover ceremony. IHS Zambia’s CSR initiatives exemplify a holistic approach to community development. Beyond structures, they invest in human capital, ensuring that no community is left behind.

The handover at Kanyanja Community School is a testament to CSR’s transformative potential. IHS Zambia is not just building structures; they are nurturing empowered communities where education inspires hope and sparks lasting change. As we weave through CSR, sustainability and education, let Kanyanja be our inspiration — a call to invest in the future, one school, one community and one child at a time.

Mabiza Cycling Safety and Environmental Awareness Capaign

On August 18, 2023, Mabiza Resources Limited collaborated with CSR Network Zambia and Kumalundu Trails to launch an environmental awareness and cycling safety campaign in the Chikani area of Chikankata district. This region has witnessed a surge in charcoal production, supplying Mazabuka, Kafue and Lusaka, making it a critical focus for our collective efforts.

The dedicated team consisted of representatives from Mabiza Resources, CSR Network Zambia, Kumalundu Trails, World Vision and Zambia Traffic Police. Together, we engaged with over two hundred Chikani residents, many of whom are actively involved in charcoal production. During our interactions, numerous concerns were voiced, including the rampant deforestation without reforestation efforts, unsustainable charcoal production methods and a growing number of accidents involving cyclists transporting heavy charcoal loads. Additionally, we learned of children being kept from school to assist with charcoal production, further highlighting the need for change.

Mabiza Resources has pledged to work closely with local communities on tree-planting initiatives. Through collaboration with World Vision, we aim to introduce smart agricultural practices and Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) techniques that not only benefit the environment but also create additional income opportunities and improve livelihoods. Our commitment extends to supporting activities that promote the conservation and protection of natural resources, foster ecological balance and strengthen the bond between communities and the environment.

A representative from the Zambia Police noted that many accidents involving motorists and cyclists can be prevented through increased attention, better understanding of road responsibilities, and enhanced mutual respect. Our engagement with the community aimed to create a safe and harmonious environment for all road users, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect. By raising awareness and providing education, we can make cycling safer. A safer cycling environment promotes it as both a secure mode of transportation and a healthy recreational activity that benefits individual health, community well-being, and the planet.

As a symbol of our commitment to road safety, members of the Chikani community, represented by their three headmen, were provided with bright reflective vests and reflective stickers for their bicycles to enhance visibility on the road. This initiative is a step toward safer roads and a more sustainable future. Together, we can make a positive impact and promote harmonious coexistence between all road users.
